Form & Function: Horizontal Leanings

Designing a dress made from used ties may strike one as an eccentric approach to tackling the renewable energy crisis, but it’s precisely the attitude of creating something new from old parts that compels the broad theme within BodyVox’s Horizontal Leanings. The need to change and build upon the tried and true repertoire of dance is a consistency of the company’s, and you will certainly find yourself in a different reality from the moment the lights dim and playful sheep whisk you away into the fantasy of childhood dreams, only to have said fantastical creatures, also known as dancers, tear themselves apart in BodyVox’s signature ominous piece, The Bunny. We’re speaking metaphorically of course, this is a family-friendly production.

Contemporary dance can’t be written about however in this author’s opinion, at least not very well. The expression of the human body in motion…brief, beautiful, and fleeting. One can get lost in the moment, but be unable to verbalize the precise instant where they did so, and it is not my intent to define the inexpressible, or I would have become an art critic. I CAN say that audience members have continuously echoed their excitement during the run of the show.  Now with our final weekend upon us, take a moment to reflect on why you enjoy the articulations of movement and you just might be one step closer to understanding the inner machinations of a dancer. Or don’t, just come see Horizontal Leanings and enjoy yourself.
