An Interview with Jamey Hampton

As BodyVox nears the completion of its fourteenth season, we continue to expand our creative potential. The Cutting Room is an all new work which pulls inspiration from an eclectic repertoire of film genre. Unraveling the boundaries between cinema and contemporary dance is not only fun, but necessary in an artistic world dominated by rigid ego. To help clarify this sentiment, I sat down with one of BodyVox’s artistic directors, Jamey Hampton, for a brief interview.

It’s funny how much knowledge you gain when you feel you’re not learning anything.

What is the real? Authenticity in movement

One phrase of the celebrated Martha Graham’s which moves me is this, ‘A body cannot lie’.

In our terribly busy adulthood it becomes all too easy to not necessarily lie, but rather mask the torrent of inward emotion, which children are comparatively more than happy to share with the world.

Dude, you need to like...BE the wave

Get your thesaurus out (people still carry those, right? I mean dictionaries just GIVE you the answer), because the term for the day is ‘collective movement’.  When we contrast contemporary dance to ballet, emphasis is primarily based on the former of unique individual expression.

Finding balance: identity through movement

I find learning to dance when you don’t know how is rather like when first riding a bicycle. You better have a sense of humor about the whole thing, because you are going to fall down. Alot. Practice diligently though, and senses eventually start to register, appropriate shifts of weight automatically occurring in order to maintain balance.

BodyVox's fantastic emporium of oeuvre: Purchase ten or more cases of verve and save BIG!

Recently, I was fortunate enough to chance upon a performance of Joshua Bell’s at the Oregon Symphony, and the word that immediately sprang to mind that evening was ‘craft’. Here is an individual who constantly hones his skill, dedication to art is a difficult and beautiful medium not easily imitated.

Dancing-400% more effective than neurotoxin! (Statistic may be an approximate)
