(Portland, Oregon) Portland's innovative BodyVox, announces its 2011/12 home season encompassing four shows for a total of thirty-three performances and featuring three world premieres, all performed at the state of the art BodyVox Dance Center. The 2011/12 season will be the company's largest home season ever, further establishing BodyVox as a major presence in Portland's creative community. Led by Artistic Directors Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, BodyVox is known for its visual virtuosity, distinctive humor, expansive collaborations, and fine tuned ability to combine multiple media - dance, theater, and film. The 2011/12 season continues this tradition with a mix of classic BodyVox repertoire, new work, and artistic partnerships.
"This is our most ambitious season to date. We are remounting our largest work ever, featuring 12 dancers on stage, creating a major new show, presenting our apprentice company BodyVox-2, and a new show from the skinner/kirk DANCE ENSEMBLE. We are presenting more shows and performances than ever before. It really feels like BodyVox has hit its stride and is cruising as gracefully as a gazelle." states Hampton.
BodyVox is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Season:
Horizontal Leanings | September 29-October 15
An exploration of the beauty, humor and friction that arise when diverse cultures and values meet in an ever-shrinking world, Horizontal Leanings distills BodyVox's singular union of imagery and dance into an intimate glimpse of real-life community concerns like relationships, recycling and diminishing greenspace. Set to original music by L.A. composer Viveck Maddala and Nu Shooz creator John Smith, Horizontal Leanings is a collision of culture, identity, movement and music, "...striking for its emotional openness." The Portland Mercury.
skinner/kirk DANCE ENSEMBLE | February 2-11
Led by two of Portland's most gifted dancer/choreographers, the skinner/kirk DANCE ENSEMBLE performs work that is intensely musical and inherently moving, while taking "...the traditional techniques of ballet into innovative territory." (The Oregonian) The superb program will feature a revival of the trapeze duet 'One' set to one of Canteloube's beautiful 'Songs of the Auvergne'', a new work by Eric Skinner and Daniel Kirk and a new duet from acclaimed Portland choreographer, Josie Moseley.
BodyVox-2 | March 1-3
This dynamic, powerful, and exceptionally talented group of dancers, is a gifted ensemble whose youth and energy provide, "...a fresh look at the blend of wit and whimsy, tenderness and athleticism that define a BodyVox show." (The Oregonian)
The Cutting Room | May 3-19
Building on its fruitful history of working in film, BodyVox will embark on a new approach to its unique brand of dance theater. Utilizing a mash up of cinematic scenes from classic films and cutting edge independent productions, action films will blend with comedy, drama and sci-fi to create an architecture for movement motifs that reinterpret the scenes, adding layers of dramatic context. Knit together with new film content from Mitchell Rose and a new score by composer Vivek Maddala, this original production will journey to an intersection of nostalgia, performance and innovation, where we find movies and memories at the heart of our shared experiences.
Season tickets will open for sale on May 5 and start at just $86. Tickets are available exclusively at the BodyVox Dance Center, online at bodyvox.com, or by calling 503.229.0627.
